Who will benefit from seeing a counsellor?
Many groups can benefit from discussing the risks, options and offerings:
couples who are considering falling pregnant but concerned about the possibilities of their combined genetics
couples who have a history of recurrent miscarriages
families members who have developmental delay or learning difficulties
families who have a history of or suspected condition
individuals who have been diagnosed with a complex medical condition
individuals who would like some help with treatment plans
What will happen at the first appointment?
During the first appointment, we will go through a health history of your family tree. In preparation, it would be a good idea to speak with your family members about their health. We will also go through any questions you may have.
At subsequent appointments, we can discuss any tests that may be appropriate.
What is the referral process?
While referrals from any other healthcare professionals is welcome, self referral is also accepted.
What is the cost of these services?
Counselling and patient advocacy programs are currently not covered by Medicare or private health insurance companies. The first consultation is $300 for 60-90 minutes. Subsequent counselling consultations are $200 for 60 minutes. Subsequent patient advocacy services are $100/hour.
